Periodontal evaluation during active Orthodontic treatment.
J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;12(2):77-82.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the periodontal status during orthodontic tooth movement, using fixed orthodontic appliance. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Eighty four male and female patients were randomly selected from orthodontic clinic in King Abdulaziz Air Base Hospital in Dhahran (KAABH) during activation visits. Periodontal clinical examination was conducted using PI (Silness and Loe 1964), GI (Loe & Sillness 1963), and crevicular measurements by PDI (Ramfjord 1959). RESULTS: It was found that the majority of the cases (70.2%) had moderate amount of plaque deposits. In parallel, (85.7%) of the sample showed moderate gingival inflammation with bleeding on probing. Gingival enlargement was evident in almost half of the cases (51.2%) while recession occured in only (12%). CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of this study it can be concluded that fixed orthodontic appliance might be a predisposing factor for plaque accumulation and subsequent gingival inflammation. Also, gingival enlargement is a common finding within orthodontic patients while recession can occur in few cases. Lower anterior teeth were at the highest risk of periodontal problems during active orthodontic therapy.
