A review of Radiation Protection and safety in the Dental Office.

The exposure of human body to x-radiations is biologically undesirable. In striving for good radiological health practices in dentistry, the goal is to reduce radiation exposure to the patients and radiation workers to the minimum, consistent with diagnostic requirements. Various responsible organizations have developed guidelines and recommendations designed to help attain this goal. Today, the dental patients are well aware of the hazards of x-rays. Dental professionals must be prepared to discuss the possible steps taken to reduce the hazard. This paper reviews different recommendations for safe use of ionizing radiation in the dental office, including the procedures for protection of the patients and the operator from any unnecessary radiation exposure. Suggestions are offered to develop a protocol for safe use of x-rays in dental office. This is a review article.
