Association of lupus anticoagulant with recurrent fetal loss.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;13(4):23-5.

The study was carried out to determine the frequency of lupus anticoagulant in women presenting with history of recurrent foetal loss. Population under study included 848 women with history of recurrent early and late foetal loss. Study population was divided into two groups. Group-I included 590 who presented with history of foetal loss at any gestational age and with one or more than one abortion, or history of neonatal death (within first 28 days of life), still birth and intrauterine deaths of foetuses. These patients were referred without exclusion of other causes of foetal loss. Group-II included 258 women with similar problems but in whom other causes were first excluded. Blood was collected in EDTA and citrate anticoagulants for complete blood counts and coagulation based laboratory tests. Lupus anticoagulant activity was detected by Dilute Russel Viper Venom Test. Eight hundred and forty eight cases were screened for lupus anticoagulant. The median age of patients was 28 years (range 19-38 years). Lupus anticoagulant activity was detected in 35 (4.13%). Out of 590 women in group-I 12 (2.03%) were positive for lupus anticoagulant. In group-II 23 (8.91%) tested positive for lupus anticoagulant. It was concluded that frequency of lupus anticoagulant in patients with bad obstetric history is comparable to that published by other workers, provided other causes have been excluded prior to test.
