Objective: To compare the effectiveness of energy-dense locally made food with micronutrients versus ready-to-use therapeutic food in complicated severely malnourished children at Nutritional Stabilization Center Hyderabad. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial. Place and Duration of Study: Nutrition Stabilization Center, Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad, from 1st June to 31st December 2017. Material and Methods: Total 98 children with complicated primary severe acute malnutrition were taken; Group A took locally made energy dense food with micronutrients while the group B took ready to use therapeutic food (control group). Daily weight gain in both groups was recorded. Results: The average age of children was 20.51 +- 12.10 months. No significant difference in weight gain was noted between the group A and Group B 69.4% vs. 69.4% respectively (p=0.999). Mother`s perception was satisfactory in 35 (71.42%) and 49 (100%) cases regarding local made food and standard RUTF respectively. Vomiting was present in 2.04%, 4.08% and diarrhea in 4.08%, 6.12% after taking local made and standard RUTF respectively. Conclusion: Locally made energy-dense food with micronutrients is an effective alternate intervention to ready to use therapeutic food in complicated severe acute malnutrition.
