Subconjunctival injection of Steroid Antibiotic combination in Cataract Surgery.

Purpose: To assess the need of subconjunctival injection of steroid antibiotic combination in cataract surgery. Method.- One hundred eyes operated serially for cataract by phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implant in which subconjunctival steroid antibiotic injection was given at the end of surgery. In another 100 patients operated serially for cataract by phacoemulsification with foldable Intraocular lens implant but no subconjunctival injection was given. The features observed were flare and cells in the anterior chamber on first post operative day. Result: In group A, 96 eyes had flare grade +1 and +2 and 4 eyes had flare grade +3 and +4, whereas in group B where subconjunctival injection was not given flare grade +1 and +2 was observed in 70 patients and grade +3 and +4 was observed in 30 eyes. Cell grading in anterior chamber in group A was +1 and +2 in 97 eyes and +3 in 3 eyes and +4 in none, whereas in group B cell grading of +1 and +2 was in 89 eyes and +3 and +4 in 11 eyes. None of the eye in each group developed endophthalmitis Conclusion: Subconjuctival injection of steroid and antibiotic combination definitely reduced inflammatory response in post cataract surgery eyes.
