Bilirubin estimation in neonatal jaundice: comparative study between autoanalyze (Diazo- method) and Bilirubinometer (Direc Photometric method).
Pak Paed J Jan ;27(2):68-73.

Objective: To compare bilirubin estimation by Hitachi Autoanalyzer 902 (2-5 diazo method) with Advanced Bilirubin Stat Analyzer Photometer (direct spectrophotometeric method). Material & Methods: The study was carried out in the Neonatal unit of the Children`s Hospital & Institute of Child Health, Lahore from november 2001 to february 2002. Venous samples from jaundiced neonates were taken and sent to the Chemical Pathology Dept. for analysis employing 2-5 dichlorophenyl diazonium method (Hitachi Autoanalyzer). For each patient 30ul serum was also used for bilirubin estimation by direct spectrophotometeric method (Advanced Bilirubin Stat Analyzer Photometer-bilirubinometer). Statistical Analysis was done by SPSS (11) computer package by calculating Pearson Coefficient of correlation. Results: Seventy five consecutive blood samples were taken from jaundiced neonates with mean age of 5.6 days (± 2.99) and mean weight of 2.54 kg. Comparison of the paired samples by the two methods showed significant (p value < 0.001) correlation with r of 0.69 (95% Cl= 0.44 - 0.72) for total serum bilirubin and r of 0.961 (95% Cl= 0.92- 0.99) for direct bilirubin. Conclusion: This study has shown that bilirubinometer, which can be easily used within the neonatal unit, is quite reliable and accurate for bilirubin estimation in neonatal jaundice.
