Proctological day case surgery.

Objectives: To evaluate the results of Proctological day case surgery planned under caudal anaesthesia. Study Design: A prospective randomized study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Surgery, Lahore General Hospital, Lahore from September 2001 to August 2003. Subject/Methods: The study includes 111 patients having common anorectal surgical conditions recruited with consent, over 2 years. All patients were subjected to day case surgery planned under caudal block. Results: Ninety two patients (82.88%) were satisfied with the method of anesthesia and 89(80.18%) patients showed their satisfaction with the post operative pain control. Ninety eight patients (82.29%) were contended with the preoperative and postoperative information and 99(89.18%) patients found day case surgery convenient and showed their willingness to choose this day case surgery if required again. Conclusion: Day case proctological surgery under caudal block is highly applicable with a patient`s acceptability of 89.18%. It is cost effective and reduces the work load on the elective list.
