Pak Paed J Jan ;27(3):114-6.

Objective:- To find out the frequency of tuberculosis in BCG vaccinated and BCG non-vaccinated children and thus to determine the protective role of BCG against tuberculosis. Design:- This was an observational analytical study. Place of duration of study:- The study was conducted in Pediatric Unit II of Bahawal Victora Hospital Bahawalpur from May 10th, 2002 to May 10th 2003. Subject/Methodology:- One hundred cases suffering from different forms of tuberculosis fulfilling the diagnostic criteria set in the ward were selected. BCG scar mark was considered as the sole indicator of vaccination against tuberculosis. Patients were divided into vaccinated and non-vaccinated groups and tabulated with sub-type of tuberculosis with their number and percentage. Statistical analysis of results was done by applying suitable test of significance and thus frequency of tuberculosis and protective role of BCG vaccine was found out. P value of <0.05 was taken as significant. Results:- Out of 100 patients of tuberculosis admitted during this period 76 were vaccinated while 24 were non vaccinated. From the 35 pulmonary tuberculosis cases, 27(77.%) were vaccinated and 8(22.8%) were non vaccinated. In the same manner, 8(88.8%) each of glandular and bone and spine while 30(83.4%) were of tuberculous meningitis in the vaccinated group while the same proportion in the non-vaccinated group were 11.2% each in glandular, bone and spine and 16.7% of tuberculous meningitis groups. Eight (72.3%) patients of abdominal tuberculosis were non-vaccinated while (3(27.7%) were vaccinated. Suitable test of significance (standard error of difference between two proportions) was applied. "p" value of the results was determined which was significant (<0.05) in all forms of tuberculosis except in abdominal tuberculosis where it was not significant (>0.05) Conclusion:- Protective role of BCG vaccination against tuberculosis was not found in our study.
