Pak Paed J Jan ;27(4):161-4.

This cross sectional study was conducted at the Department of Child Health; Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar and Fatimid Blood Transfusion Services Peshawar from July 1999 to March 2001. During this period, eighty thalassemic children below 15 years of age with at least two blood transfusions were scrutinized for HBsAg and anti-HCV antibodies by 3rd generation ELISA method. 6 children (7.591o) were positive for HBsAg and 29 (36.25%) for anti-HCV antibodies. Direct correlation was found between HBsAg positivity rate and number of blood transfusions. Moreover, positivity rate also increased in both with increasing age of the children.
