Tizanidine in Tension type Headache; A Prospective, Open Label, 6-Weeks Dose Titration study to assess Efficacy, Safety and Tolerability.

Tension type headache (TTH) is a common complaint and treatment of chronic TTH is often a daunting therapeutic problem. Low dose tricyclic antidepressant arc usually effective in 50-60% of patients. Other drugs used are beta-blockers, muscle relaxant, analgesic and tranquillisers. A certain number of patients prove to he resistant to every modality of treatment. We have tried Tizanidine in TTH. It is both a muscle relaxant and centrally acting analgesic. In this prospectus open label, six weeks dose titration, multicentre study, sixty patients were enrolled and 54-patients completed the study. On global impression scale 63% of patients showed moderate to much improvement in headache as compared to 7.35 of pretreatment phase. Similarly number of headache free days increased from 7.3 to 11.5. Number of working hours lost decreased from 76.5 l0 41.1 hours and amount of analgesic use decreased by 82%. Side effects included drowsiness, dry mouth, lethargy and dizziness. These were transitory and non of the patients discontinued drug due to these complaints.
