Antibiotics in bacterial meningitis in infants and children.

Fifteen years ago, the treatment of bacterial meningitis was based on a standard therapy with a combination of ampicillin and chloramphenicol. Now there are many choices including new cephalosporins and standard therapy, and they can all be effective. As there are continuously changing patterns of antimicrobial resistance, pediatricians will also have to constantly re-evaluate the use of antibiotics in bacterial meningitis. This is a review article.
