Abnormal bleeding in children.

Abnormal bleeding is considered when there is spontaneous bleeding or unusually prolonged bleeding after minor trauma or surgery. In this study 65 new cases of abnormal bleeding who were admitted in the Department of Paediatrics. Mayo Hospital. Lahore from 1st July 1997 to 31st August 1998 were analysed. We found idiopathic thrombocytopaenic purpura as the most common (21.6%) bleeding disorder followed by haemophilia A (16.9%) and acquired aplastic anaemia (13.85%). Other diagnoses included von Willebrand Disease, Christmas disease. leukaemia etc. The most common clinical manifestations were spontaneous bruising (73.85%), epistaxis (35.85%) and bleeding on minor trauma. Family history of bleeding disorder was present in 64% of genetic bleeding disorders. In this study peak age of admission was m first and second years of life. The male to female ratio was 1.6:1. As a part of their management these patients received whole blood. fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate ad platelet transfusions
