Prevalance of urinary tract infection in congenital urinary tract anomalies.

A prospective study of 82 cases of Congenital Urinary Tract Anomalies (CUTA) was carried out from January 1996 to December 1997 at Nephrology Department of National Institute of Child Health, Karachi, for presence of urinary tract infection (UTI). 61 males and 21 females of 0-14 years age were included in the study. 38 cases (46.5%) proved to have UTI. UTI was seen in posterior urethral valve (PUV)(50%), pelvi ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) (47.4%), primary vesico ureteric reflux recto vesical fistula (RVF) (100%), Hypospandias (66%). It is recommended that every case of CUTA should be evaluated for UTI to prevent renal damage.
