Cranial Ultrasound - triage of patients.
Pak Paed J Jan ;19(2):55-9.

Real time cranial sonography through the anterior fontanelle provides rapid and non-invasive evaluation of neonates and young infants. Eighty neonates and infants were studied in a prospective manner to rule out intracranial pathology and classify patients for proper management over a period of four years from 1989-1992. There were 45 neonates and infants in whom the ultrasound scan (US) was normal while intracranial pathology was detected in 35. Amongst these hydrocephalus was detected in 31 cases gross in 21, minimal dilatation of ventricles in 10, with resolving peri-ventricular hemorrhage in two and peri-ventricular calcification was seen in one neonate. Sub-dural effusion, Dandy Walker malformation and posterior fossa cysts were also identified. Correlation with computed tomography (CT) was available in a total of 15 patients.
