Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial foreign bodies.

A series of 100 cases of foreign bodies in the larynx and trachoobronchial tree is reported. Children below 3 years comprised the majority (72%). Betel nut was the commonest foreign body (45%) and material of organic nature was found in 88% cases. Right main bronchus was the site of lodgement in 58% cases. History of foreign body aspiration was positive in 72% cases. Severe cough with or without wheeze usually occurred after aspiration. Decreased air entry and obstructive emphysema were the commonest clinical and radiological signs. All the patients were subjected to rigid laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. The success rate was 99% with no mortality. No significant post-operative complications developed. A good team work and trained anesthesiologist is of utmost importance.
