Pak Paed J Jan ;20(2):59-62.

Objective: To determine the rate and trend of still births in low socioeconomic group residing in North Karachi, Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted by collecting the data through, a) sampled survey of the population, b) secondary data for the registration of live births from Zonal Municipal committees, (ZMC) and c) from grave yard for the still births. The result of the three were used to calculate still births per 1000 birth. Results: Only 64% of the children of North Karachi had their births registered with ZMC. A high number of still births was observed. The data collected from grave yard and ZMC showed higher rate as compared to sample survey of the population. The rate from year 1988, through 1992 were varing between 84/1000, to 52/1000, while sample survey of the population showed that the rate of still birth for the respective year was fluctuating between 40/1000, to 23/1000 The number of still births from survey was low probably due to the taboo that people attach to and so hide still births.
