Management of hypothermia in Neonatal Surgery using a locally made device.
Pak Paed J Jan ;22(2):53-6.

Hypothermia is a common problem faced during management of neonates in hospitals. It is preventable if necessary measures are taken. In most of the neonatal care units inadequate warming exists and so is the situation in the operation theatres. Objectives: To introduce a locally designed warming system which is cost effective and can be successfully used in the management of neonatal problems. Setting: A total of 164 neonates were managed during the period front June 1995 to May 1997. Out of these 62 neonates suffered hypothermia during some phase of the management. Forty hypothermic babies had to be managed on the warming trolley. Thirty seven normothermic patients were also managed on this system. Design: Prospective study. Procedure: All neonates who developed hypothermia in the ward and nursery were shifted to the warming trolley. At least 4 hourly record of axillary temperature of all the neonates under study was kept. Warming elements were operated at 750 watts till the surface temperature was normal. Results: All of these neonates recovered from hypothermia successfully. Thirty seven normothermic babies were managed on Cite warming trolley and only two developed hypothermia of 1C or more. Conclusions: Adequate measures taken for the prevention of hypothermia will certainly save many neonates.
