Trends in childhood Acute Leukemia: Six year experience at Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore.

During the period of 6 years (1994-1999), 116 cases of childhood leukaemia were diagnosed at the Haematology Department, Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore. Six cases of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) 5.2% were excluded and the other 110 eases of acute leukemia (AL) 94.8%, were further analyzed. Amongst 110 cases of AL. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) accounted for 69.1% acute mveloid leukemia (AML) for 29.1% and acute bilineal leukaemia for 1.8%. Males dominated with an overall M:F ratio of 2.2:1. AL showed a peak incidence patients upto 5 years of age with subsequent decline in older age groups. ALL-L1 subtype accounted for this early age peak. Amongst ALL cases, L1 subtype was most frequent accounting for 63.2% followed by L2 (34.2%) and 3 (2.6%). Amongst AML cases M2 subtype was most frequent accounting for 50% followed by M4 (15.6%). M0 (12.5%), M3 (9.4%), Ml (6.3%), M5 (3.1%) and M6 (3.1%).
