Pak Paed J Jan ;24(2):69-72.

This was a prospective study over a period of six months from August 1995 to January 1996 In Ibis stud risk factors were analyzed both tar development of tetanus and its outcome. It was found that major factors for development of tetanus were lack of immunization of the mothers (only 8% mothers were immunized), unhygienic deliveries by untrained "dias” / birth attendants and cutting the umbilicus with unhygienic and unsterilized objects lack of care of umbilical stump and application of materials over the umbilical stump. Hot and humid climate and infection of the umbilical stump were also found to be risk for developing neonatal tetanus. Risk factor for poor outcome after developing neonatal tetanus were unimunized mothers rapid onset and shorter incubation period
