ARI case management in a community.
Pak Paed J Jan ;19(1):9-13.

A community based study was carried out in two villages of Islamabad Capital Territory. One hundred children upto 2 years of age with respiratory complaints were assessed and treated according to the WHO and National Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) programme guidelines. Out of these children 81% had cold (no pneumonia) who got better on home care advice. Sixteen percent had pneumonia who responded to oral cotrimoxazole. Three children had severe pneumonia or very severe disease, who were treated with injectable antibiotics in the hospital. Sixty nine percent of children were well nourished. Ninety one percent were being breast fed at the time of study. The National ARI Control Programme guidelines for standard ARI case management are simple, valuable and practical for use at the community level.
