C-Reactive protein: A sensitive indicator of neonatal septicemia.
Pak Paed J Jan ;19(1):23-5.

This study was conducted with a view to evaluate the predicative value of C-reactive protein (CRP) as an indicator of rapid diagnosis of neonatal septicemia and to compare it with certain other laboratory parameters. CRP was found to be present in 80% of proven cases (clinically suggestive and culture positive) 75% in probable cases (clinically suggestive and culture negative), 25% in less likely group (clinically non-suggestive and culture negative) and 10% in control group. Statistically the difference of proven and probable versus less likely and control group was significant. CRP ranked better in sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative accuracy as compared to other screening tests such as absolute neutrophil count, band cell: neutrophil ratio, platelet count, nitroblue tetrazolium reduction test and acridine orange staining test.
