Impact of sedative on children`s appetite.
Pak Paed J Jan ;20(1):7-9.

The study was designed to investigate the impact of a sedative promethazine (phenergan) on appetite of children under two years of age. Ninety six children from two semiurban areas of district Peshawar were selected randomly and divided into two groups: those who received sedatives from their mothers and those who did not. The children`s mothers were invited to a local Basic Health Unit (BHU) to participate in the child`s appetite test. Diced potatoes were used as a test diet for all the children. Before giving the test diet to the children, all the mothers were asked about their child`s health, awaking time, and the last food he/she received to ascertain that the child meets the pre-established criteria of enrollment. A weighed amount of diced potatoes was given to each mother to give it to her child ad-libitum. The amount of potatoes consumed by the child was calculated from the total amount of potatoes given to the mothers minus that left in the bowl. Besides, dietary intake of the children, anthropometric (weight and height of the children) and biochemical (hemoglobin and serum ferritin level) measurements were also taken. The results revealed that there were no significant differences in the mean anthropometric and biochemical levels between the two groups of the children. However, the group of children receiving sedatives had a significantly lower mean intake of the test diet (potatoes intake) as compared to that of non-sedative group.
