Cataract: an unusual pediatric complication of diabetes mellitus.
Pak Paed J Jan ;22(1):29-31.

This is a case report of a 12 year old female child who had gone for her ophthalmological checkup with complaints of progressive blindness over the last G months. She was referred to Sandeman (Prov) Hospital, Quetta for the evaluation of the cause of the bilateral cataracts which the girt had. There was vague history of polyuria and polydipsia running back to two years. During that period she had also lost some weight but she did not consult any doctor for these complaints. Before that period she was healthy with a normal growth and development. At the time of admission her height and weight were below the 3rd percentile for her age and sex, she had not attained puberty and was in stage I of Tanner`s `sex maturity ratings`. Apart from the bilateral mature cataracts there was no other detectable ophthalmological lesion. Kayser-Fliescher (K.F) rings were specifically looked for, but retinal examination could not be done property because of the cataracts. Patients nervous system was normal. Her blood sugar was 450mg/dl, but there was no ketonuria or albuminuria. Finally, with these findings and exclusion of other possible causes of cataract formation, diabetes mellitus was assumed to be the cause of cataracts in this patient.
