Pediatric morbidity and mortality 1972 compared with 1998 in a Teaching Hospital.

A retrospective analysis of hospital data of various diseases as seen in 1972 is compared with that of 1998. Results: Acute gastroenteritis was on top despite the fate that there was a relative fall in acute gastroenteritis admissions from 38.4% to 20.3% over these years mainly due to use of ORS. Chronic diarrhea has surfaced to prominence from 0.3% to 5.9%. Others include almost same acute respiratory tract infections (10%), fall in admission of miliary tuberculosis, pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculous meningitis (from 5% to 0.8%). Mild to severe malnutrition and anemia was almost always present in all the admitted cases.
