Empyema Thoracic: A bacteriological and clinical study in infants and children.

A prospective study was carried out for one year at the department of pediatric surgery. A total of fifty cases of empyema thoracic were treated during this period. Males were predominantly affected. Fever (98%), respiratory distress (80%), and cough (54%) were the main presenting symptoms. Forty four percent were below 1 year of age. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism found in this series. All the patients were initially treated with tube drainage system and antibiotics. Six patients (12%) needed decortication afterwards. Three patients (6%) died in this series.
