Role of Ultrasound in Early Diagnosis of Renal Colic.
Biomedica Jan ;17:44-5.

The prospective study was conducted to recognize the efficacy of ultrasound in the initial / early evaluation of renal colic. One hundred twenty one patients were registered from July 1999 to June 2000. These patients were referred from the out-patient department and emergency department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore for radiographic evaluation of renal colic. All sonographic studies were performed with real-time sector scanner using 3.5 Mhz probe. The presence of positive criteria was observed in 105 out of 121 patients (86.8%). The remaining 16 (13.2%) patients having hydronephrosis / hydroureter were found to be having other causes responsible. Out of 105 patients proved to be having urinary calculi, ultrasound correctly identified the diagnosis in 98 patients (93.3%). So the sensitivity of ultrasonography to detect renal calculi was 93.3% and specificity was 100%.
