Management of Acute Pancreatitis - A Hospital Based Study.

Fifty adult patients, of acute pancreatitis belonging to both sexes were admitted in a surgical unit at Mayo Hospital Lahore from January 9999 to January 2000. Male to female ratio was 9:2.4 with a mean age of 32 years. Majority of patients were in younger age group i.e. < 40 years. All of them were admitted through emergency department as cases of acute abdomen.

All the patients were diagnosed and treated as cases of acute pancreatitis. 35 patients (70%) recovered without any complications. Fifteen patients (30%) developed complications 5% had local and 25% developed systemic complications). Patients developing systemic complications were managed conservatively while those developing local complications underwent specific operative procedures. Overall mortality of patients suffering from acute pancreatitis was 1.5% in our set up.
