Rubber Band Ligation in Second Degree Haemorrhoids.

Objective: To observe effectiveness of rubber band ligation in management of 2nd degree haemorrhoids. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Surgical Unit-III Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore. Period: Jan. 1997 to Dec. 1997. Material and Methods: Rubber band ligation was done on sixty six patients suffering from 2nd degree haemorrhoids. Amongst them 59 patients who presented for follow up were included in this study including 38 males and 21 females.

Results: Fifty three patients (89.8%) were totally symptom free at one month of follow up. In 4 patients (6.8%) there were some improvement and in 2 patients (3.4%) there was no improvement. In 3 patients (5.1%) there was slippage of ligature and in 1 patient (1.7%) secondary haemorrhage was observed.

Conclusion: Rubber band ligation is reliable and safe out door procedure for 2nd degree haemorrhoids.
