Non-Hodgkin`s Lymphomas - II: Role of surgery in the management of Non-Hodgkin`s Lymphoma in children.

In this retrospective study conducted at the Children Hospital, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad, the role of surgery in the management of non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma (NHL) in children managed during the period of nine years from January 1990 to December 1999, was reviewed. During this period, eighty four patients including 60 males and 24 females with age range from one year to 14 years were diagnosed. In all the patients, complete blood picture, peripheral film, x-ray chest, ultrasound abdomen and, in selected cases, CT scan were performed. Fifty six (69.1%) patients underwent primary surgery for biopsy to establish the diagnosis on histopathology. Forty patients (49 %) received complete course of chemotherapy, while forty one (51%) patients did not receive complete treatment. The role of surgery in the management of patients with NHL is to: a) Confirm the diagnosis by taking biopsy for histopathology, b) Staging of the disease and c) Treat a complication of the disease.
