Spinal anesthesia is one of the oldest methods of anesthesia used in neural hospitals and dispensaries. It is also used in most of the District hospitals and private clinics and in some of the teaching hospitals in Pakistan. Minimal need of instrument, simple technique, little skill, economy and little manpower needed are the main factors responsible for its popularity. Good muscular relaxation, less bleeding, contracted gut is the advantages, for which some surgeons prefer this method of anesthesia. The main drawback of this method of analgesia is its complications mainly post-spinal backache for which it is mostly discouraged in the Western world. We believe that its complications are over exaggerated by the Western literature and in developing countries like Pakistan where its benefits overweigh its disadvantages.
