Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;50(2):85-90.

This study was conducted at 3 medical centers of Karachi from January 1995 to January 2000. Total 500 patients ages ranging from day 1 to 68 years were included in the study. All these patients had presented with palpable adnexal mass and underwent Transabdominal or Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS) of the pelvis. The scan was performed with variable frequency 3.7 to 6.0 MHz convex and micro convex probes using Tosbee and Eccocee. At these medical centers more than 40,000 pelvic U/S were performed in 5 years but of these only 500 patients who had palpable adnexal masses and had either a follow-up ultrasound (U/S) examination, CT, MRI, Laparoscopy or surgery were included in the study. The incidence was found to be highest in the 3rd decade of life, 23% of these were found to be follicular cysts, 69% of ovarian masses measured between 4-10 cm and 88% of all recorded masses were benign. Our study showed 100% sensitivity in picking up palpable adnexal masses but specifically was variable from 85% onwards.
