J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;15(1):37.

The study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Data was collected on unselected patients with OSA seen over a two-year period. Data elicited information on patient characteristics, symptoms, medications, addictions, past history, family history and physical examination. Epworth sleepiness scale was used to assess daytime sleepiness. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) was performed to confirm the diagnosis and severity of OSA. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 10.5. Descriptive analysis was performed to evaluate demographic, clinical and laboratory data. Results were expressed as mean (± Standard Deviation) or numbers (%) as appropriate. During the study period, 30 patients had PSG confirmed OSA, with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) >5 per hour. Sleep study results showed that the AHI was 37.98 (±19.07) and arousal index was 25.0 (±15.49). Patients had age of 49.71 (± 9.82) years, collar size of 16.70 (± 0.85) inches, weight of 90.28 (± 19.83) kg, height of 1.67 (± 0.01) meters, body mass index of 32.32 (± 7.53) kg/m2 and a total Epworth score of 16.3 (± 4.41). There was a strong male predominance (87%). Family history of snoring was positive in 20 (67%) patients. Tobacco addiction was noted in 16 (53%) and alcohol in 3 (10%). Hypertension was present in 18 (60%) and diabetes mellitus in 7 (23%). One (3%) patient was found to have hypothyroidism.
