Serum Copper and Zinc Levels and Serum Copper / Zinc Ratio in Patients suffering from oral Carcinoma.
Biomedica Jan ;15:92-6.

Sixty consecutive biopsy proven cases of oral carcinoma and thirty apparently healthy volunteers were included in this study. The patients were categorised for the stage of the disease. Serum Copper and Zinc levels were estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Serum Copper / Zinc ratio was calculated. Serum Copper levels were significantly increased in whole group, as well as in male and female patients separately (p < 0.001). Serum Zinc levels were significantly decreased in whole group, and in male patients (p < 0.001), however, there was no significant decrease in serum Zinc levels in females patients (p < 0.05). Serum Cu/Zn ratio was significantly increased in whole group, as well as in male and female patients, separately (p < 0.001). This paper also correlates serum copper and zinc levels and serum Cu/Zn ratio with clinical stage of disease.
