A Study on the Efficacy of Dermatophyte Test Media.
Biomedica Jan ;15:100-2.

A study was done to see whether Dermatophyte Test Media (DM could be used by inexperienced medical men for dermatophyte isolation, because of its change in colour from yellow to red on dermatophyte growth. One hundred and ten specimens of skin scraping and hair stump were inoculated on DTM. Taplins criteria was used for distinguishing a dermatophyte, this involves change of colour from yellow to red indicating a change in pH from 5.5 to 8.4 over a period of fourteen days. The results revealed that all dermatophytes isolated changed the media colour from yellow to red within fourteen days, so dermatophyte identification was much easier, but there was also growth of contaminant fungi, bacteria and yeast, which led to false positive results and decreased DTM efficacy in identification and isolation of dermatophyte.
