Clinical Presentation Of Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Patients of renal cell carcinoma were analysed in relationship to presenting features and staging at the time of presentation. Twenty five patients of renal cell carcinoma of either sex were included in the study from April 1997 to March 1998 at the department of Urology, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Fifteen patients were males and 10 were females with a male to female ratio of 1.5:1. Age ranged from 22-71 years (mean age 51.7 years). Among 25 patients, 12 patients (48%) presented with haematuria, 4 (16%) abdominal mass, 12 (48%) lumbar pain, only one patient (4%) presented with triad symptoms (i.e., pain, haematuria and abdominal mass), 7 (28%) were diagnosed incidentally by ultrasonography. Stage I disease was present in 14 (56%) patients, 1 (4%) had stage II disease, 3 (12%) patients were in stage III, and 7 (28%) had stage IV. In all except two cases nephrectomy was done. No complication was encountered peroperatively. Post operatively excess drain and wound infection were noted in one case which was treated conservatively.
