Oral complications in adult male & female Orthodontic patients.
J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;13(3):139-44.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the common prevalent intra-oral complications in adult patients during routine orthodontic diagnosis and check-up. PAITENTS & METHODS: The data was collected from clinical examination of 75 adult patients who were checked intra-orally regarding prevalent complications at the orthodontic department in Jinnah Medical & Dental College, Karachi. Common adult complications such as periodontitis, marginal gingivitis, gingival recession, root treated teeth, crown and bridge, broken down roots (BDR`s), amalgam fillings and previously missing or extracted teeth were noted. RESULTS: Both adult males and females (M:F ratio 34:41) ranging from 26-34 years age showed prevalence towards gingival recessions and periodontitis. Adult males showed more prevalence towards previously missing teeth and BDR`s, while female adults showed more prevalence towards crown & bridge restorations and root treated teeth. CONCLUSION: Adult patients suffered from a wide range of complications during routine orthodontic diagnosis, which interferes with orthodontic treatment planning. Treatment of the conditions facilitates a multi-disciplinary approach consisting of orthodontics, periodontics, prosthetics, endodontics and oral surgery towards the clinical management of these patients. However, further research is required with greater patient numbers to investigate adult orthodontics problems.
