Biomedica Jan ;15:43-6.

Cancer patients represent a significant group susceptible to various infections. The present study was designed to find out the causative agents of bacteraemia and fungaemia in cancer patients. Blood was cultured from fifty septicaemic cancer patients having various malignancies. Samples were processed for the presence of both bacterial and fungal pathogens. Positive blood cultures were observed in 56% of the cases of which 52% (26) were due to bacteremia and 04% (02) due to fungaemia. The 26 bacteraemic cases yielded 19 aerobic, 02 anaerobic, 03 polymicrobial (aerobic) and 02 mixed aerobic and anaerobic growths. Staphylococcus aureus (16%), Pseudomonas species (10%), and Corynebacterium (08%) were the commonest isolates. Amongst the anaerobes, Bacteroides (04%), Peptostreptococci (02%), and Peptococci (02%) were isolated. Candida (04%) was the only fungal pathogen isolated from the blood of cancer patients.
