Nuclear Medicine: an emerging diagnostic field.
J Med Sci Jan ;11(1):1-8.

Nuclear medicine is a specialty that uses radioisotopes for scanning of different organs of body. Tracer is either injected or ingested which then accumulates in desired organ according to radiopharmaceutical used. Organ is then imaged by gamma camera. In this way, both anatomy and physiology of an organ can be interpreted and any pathology can also be visualized. It is quite safe, non-invasive and accurate way of diagnosing different diseases. Most commonly performed scans in this field are cardiac, renal, bone, liver, lung and thyroid. However, there are many others that are done infrequently due to certain limitations.
