Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;11(3):89-92.

Gynaecological emergencies are bound to present fairly regularly in the course of general surgical practice. A surgeon must therefore be familiar with the appropriate techniques for the clinical assessment and treatment of such cases. This study is an attempt to have an overall view of the clinical presentation, diagnostic modalities and management of gynaecological emergencies in general surgery. Out of 502 female patients admitted with acute abdomen through Accident & Emergency Department, Jinnah Hospital Lahore over a period of two years, 47 (93%) cases were found to have acute gynaecological problems. Acute lower abdominal pain was the commonest presentation found in 723% and ectopic pregnancy was the most common gynaecological emergency observed in 36.1% cases. Pelvic inflammatory disease was recorded in 29.7% patients while intrauterine contraceptive device was the most frequent etiological factor (78.5%) of PID. Wound infection was the commonest postoperative complication recorded in 23% cases. The present study emphasizes the need for increased awareness of gynaecological emergencies by a general surgeon along with knowledge of various therapeutic options.
