Pattern of Deaths due to firearms in Lahore - A twelve-year study.

This study was conducted to know the demography of firearm injuries, the weapons used and the manner of death in firearm related deaths in our country. 958 autopsies conducted by the authors between 1984 and 1995 were evaluated for the above factors. It was revealed that the incidence of firearm related a death has almost doubled over the twelve-year period. The use of high velocity weapons has significantly increased over the period of time. Shotguns were the main weapons used in the early part of the study but the predilection of being shot by a rifled weapon increased over the period under study. The victims were primarily males (88%) between the ages of 21-30 years (42.5%). About 93% of the fatal firearm injuries were homicidal in nature and most of the victims (76%) were killed by a distant discharge.
