Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;11(2):81-4.

The aim of this prospective study was to review the patient distribution, to study the complications associated with the use of intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) including menstrual disturbances and reasons for discontinuing its use. One hundred patients who had IUCD insertion for contraception were enrolled in this study. The mean age of the patients was 28.85 ± 4.65 years and mean parity was 2.94 ± 0.89. Menstrual cycle remained undisturbed in 52% of the patients; heavy flow was experienced by 25%, intermenstrual spotting by 16%, continuous vaginal bleeding by 4%. Non-gestational amenorrhoea was seen in 3% and scanty menstrual flow in 1%. Vaginal discharge was experienced by 23%. Spontaneous expulsion of the device occurred in 5% and new pregnancy occurred in 2% of cases. Seven (7%) patients discontinued its use because of heavy flow at the mean duration of 83 ± 56.56 days, 3% due to irregular bleeding at 227 ± 137.5 days and 2% due to continuous bleeding at 28 ± 12.43 days. In 2 (2%) patients it was taken out due to a new pregnancy at 150 days. It was concluded that IUCD is a good contraceptive measure with relatively low complications rate. This needs to be propagated and popularized by mass media.
