A prospective observational study was carried out at the Department of Surgery, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College and Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, from 1st Jan. 2000 to 30th June 2001, to evaluate the role of split thickness skin grafting in various types of wounds. A total of 100 patients, 56 males and 44 females, were studied. Most (75%) were below the age of 30 years, with a mean age of 21.2 years in males and 25.1 years in females. Burn was the commonest cause of surgical wounds (36%), followed by contracture release (29%). In 8% patients the graft was rejected. Failure was highest in cases of leg ulcers (33%), but none in the case of tumour excisions. The commonest complication was wound infection (17%), mostly caused by Staphylococcus aureus (29%). The mean hospital stay was 18.3 days.
