Presentation of Cervical Cancer in a Teaching hospital of Lahore.
Mother & Child Jan ;38(2):52-5.

From 1st January 1998 to 31st December 1999, 19 cases of carcinoma cervix were diagnosed at Gynecology Unit I of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. 18 cases (94.7%) were squamous cell carcinoma and 1 case (5.3%) was adenocarcinoma. 3 cases (15.6%) were in stage-I, 4 cases (21%) in Stage-II and 12 cases (63.2%) were in Stage III and IV. The high rate of presentation at clinical stage IV in this study can be attributed to absence of cervical screening programme, lack of public awareness and delay on part of patients to get timely treatment. In Pakistan, most the patients are detected in the advanced stage II or III. It is necessary to design and institute an effective and acceptable screening programme. A reduction in 50-70% in the mortality rate of cervical cancer has been attributed to cervical screening.
