Proximal Tube Enterostomy Adjunct to Primary Repair of Typhoid Perforation: A Study of 33 cases at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore.

The clinical and management data of 33 patients treated at Department of Surgery Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore with typhoid perforation is presented. These patients were treated with debridement of perforation, two layers closure transversely and adjunct proximal tube enterostomy. Mean age of patient was 25.24 years and male to female ratio 4.5:1. Common clinical features were fever, abdominal pain, constipation, abdominal tenderness and illeus. Mean admission to operation interval was 8.7 hours while perforation to operation was 42 hours. 19.9% of patients showed single perforation while 9.1% multiple. Main complications postoperatively were wound infection (36.4%), septicaemia (15.2%), wound dehiscence (6.1%), faecal fistula (6.1%) and pelvic abscess (3.1%). Mean hospital stay was 20.21 days and mortality 9.1%. We found proximal tube enterostomy safe and effective procedure, with better morbidity and mortality.
