Central Nervous System: Depressant Effect of Beta Adrenergic Blocking Agents: A Comparative Study.
Biomedica Jan ;14:105-7.

Prolongation of barbiturate sleeping time was used to detect sedation of Beta Blockers which may be difficult to observe with an experimental drug per se. For this purpose the effect of Beta Adrenergic Blocking Agents on the sleeping time produced by pentobarbitone sodium (30 mg / kg) was studied in white mice. Four Beta Blockers; Pronpanolol, Timolol, Atenolol and Labetalol were injected subcutaneously 30 minutes before the injection of pentobarbitone. One group (n = 8) served as control. Four groups each comprising of eight mice served as the test groups. Prolongation of barbiturate induced sleeping time was observed with all the four agents. However it was maximum with Labetalol, followed by Propranolol.
