The Possible Influence of Occupational Radiation Exposure to Hematopoietic System.

OBJECTIVE: The dental professionals are exposed to a variety of hazards, and exposure to radiation is a high risk factor. Radiodiagnosis doses though small but frequent, thus may represent a source of cumulative doses and effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate haematological indices for dental health workers, dentists, dental surgery assistants (DSA) exposed to occupational radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine persons, from two different hospitals from Riyadh and one from Dammam, dental health workers (DHW) were included in this study. Nineteen persons were professionally at risk of exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation and 40 were dental professionals in places following the general principles of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Blood samples (5 cc) were collected and analyzed for erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets studies and Wintrobe indices. RESULTS: There was a differences between those exposed to radiation and controls in term of number of leukocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes but was not statically significant.
