J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;14(1):22-5.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to obtain information on the type of dental restorations planned for placement in the student clinics of the Male Campus (DUC) of the College of Dentistry , King Saud University (KSUCD), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. The students of the three undergraduate courses (IIIrd year BDS, IVth year BDS and Vth year BDS of Operative Dentistry) were asked to submit the treatment plans of the patients approved during the first month of the Ist semester of the session 2001-2. The approved treatment plans of 107 adult patients involving 852 restorations were submitted . The pattern and reasons of restorations were investigated by using basic statistical analyses including cross-tabulation. Where appropriate, the chi-square test was used to compare the frequency differences at the level of significance. P<0.01. RESULTS: In terms of the overall use, amalgam (46.2%) was the most commonly used material followed by composite (40.7%) and glass ionomer (4%). Class 1 (562%) and Class II (82%) preparations were mainly restored with amalgam while Class 111(91 %) and V (73%) were mainly restored with composites. and all Class IV (100%) preparations were restored with composite. Amalgam (65.6%) was the commonly used material by IIIrd year students, while composite was the most commonly used material by IVth year (52.7%) and Vth year students (45.3%). Significantly, most (93.4%) of the restorations were initial placements in all courses, primary caries (90%) being the main reason (p<0.01). Secondary caries (53.4%) was the main reason for replacements. CONCLUSIONS: Amalgam was the most commonly used material. Most of the restorations was initial placements.
