Infertility Data of Maternal and Child Health Center, PIMS.

This is a retrospective study of patients presenting in the infertility clinic of MCH center, PIMS. The prevalence of probable etiological factors was analyzed and management options offered were evaluated in order to improve the services rendered to our patients. Total OPD attendance in the study period was 55877 of which 31126 (56%) were antenatal and 24751 (44%) were gynecological patients. 2710 i.e. 11% out of the gynecological patients presented with the complaint of intertility. 64% (1727) of these patients had primary and 36% (983) had secondary infertility. Anovulation was detected in 437 (16%), tubal factor in 208 (8%) and endometriosis in 51 (2%) of the patients. Oligospermia and Azospermia were found in 124 (4.6%) and 58 (2.1%) of the couples respectively. 5 patients were detected to have congenital anomalies of the genital tract, 3 had Ashermann's syndrome and 2 had premature ovarian failure. A total of 12071 ultrasounds were done in the OPD in this period. Infertility ultrasounds were 7% (843) of the total scans, 590 (70%) were done for primary infertility and 253 (30%) for secondary. 5 Echovist scans were carried out on experimental basis and were successful though expensive. Hysteroscopies were done in 10 patients, Hysterosalpingography in 164 (6.05%) and laparoscopies in 153 patients. 65% of the total of 236 laparoscopies carried out in the department were for infertility patients. Ovulation induction in 190 cases, treatment for hyperprolacnaemia to 11 patients, for PID 67 cases, endometriosis 33 cases and 3 patients were treated for thyroid disease. 10 operative Laparoscopies were part of the surgical interventions carried out. Adhesiolysis, ablation of endometriotic implants, cystectomy and ovarian drilling was done in 28 of these 30 procedures. Cervical dilatation and resection of vaginal septum was done in 1 patient while ovarian biopsy was taken in a case of sclerotic ovaries. 12 of the 153 laparoscopies were proceeded for laparotomies. 2 were for dermoid cystectomy, 3 for adhesiolysis, 1 for fimbriostomy and 6 for Endometrial cystectomies. 16 myomectoimes were done for infertile patients. 7 tubal reconstruction procedures, 1 forcheutte operation, 4 hydrotubations following adhesiolysis and 3 cystectomies on laparotomy were carried out. <p> The prevalence of primary and secondary infertility in our study is comparable to other studies, which quote primary and secondary infertility at 60% and 32% respectively.
