Disturbances of Lipoprotein Metabolism in Diabetes.
J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;11(2):3-5.

Perturbations of lipid metabolism and particularly the role of insulin is a critical issue in diabetes. This article elucidates the knowledge on the interplay between VLDL and LDL metabolism on the one hand and VLDL and HDL metabolism on the other hand. A total of 80 diabetic subjects, 60 with NIDDM and 20 with IDDM were selected in addition to 30 healthy controls. Cholesterol and triglycerides of serum and lipoproteins were measured. Lipoprotein fractions were isolated on Svedberg floatation rate through ultracentrifugation. The lipoprotein pattern in NIDDM was characterized by elevation of serum triglycerides, VLDL triglycerides and HDL triglycerides. A lowering of HDL cholesterol and a rise of VLDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol as compared with the controls was also observed. In IDDM raised serum triglycerides, VLDL triglycerides and HDL triglycerides along with raised serum cholesterol and lipoproteins cholesterol were observed when compared with the controls. Study provides the evidence that hypertriglyceridaemia is central to many features of diabetic dyslipidaemia.
