J Ayub Med Coll Abottabad Jan ;11(2):6-8.

We present an observational study of patients of stab wound of abdomen. Males were the commonest victims with 112 cases (93.11%) as compared with 8 (6.66%) females. Eighty-four patients (70%) had additional stab wounds in other parts of the hody besides having additional stabs. 105 patients (87.5%) underwent laparotomy with 78 (17.1%) negative laparotomies. Complication rate of laparotomies was 25.7%. Mortality of the operated cases was 16.1% while none of the conservatively treated patients died. Hypovolaemia and sepsis were the common causes of morbidity and mortality. The highest incidence was in the 3rd decade of life (52 patients). Selective conservative approach coupled with latest diagnostic facilities and meticulous monitoring of the patients can avoid many negative laparotomies.
